Description

What is meta-aramid fiber and what is the synthesis method of meta-aramid fiber?

The full name of aramid fiber is "aromatic polyamide fiber", which refers to a long-chain synthetic polyamide fiber in which more than 85% of the amide bonds are directly connected to the benzene ring, high temperature resistance, high strength, high modulus, insulation and other outstanding properties. It is a new type of special polymer material. At present, there are two kinds of aramid fibers on the market that have achieved a wide range of commercial applications and production, namely meta-aramid and para-aramid.

1. What is meta-aramid

Meta-aramid is a kind of aromatic polyamide fiber (aramid fibers), the full name is poly-phenylene isophthalamide fiber, the English name meta-aramid is referred to as PMIA, we also call aramid 1313, meta-aramid The main raw materials are isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD).

2. What is the synthesis method of meta-aramid fiber

Preparation of polycondensate of m-phenylene isophthalamide Aramid 1313 is made by polycondensation of isophthaloyl chloride (ICI) and m-phenylene diamine (MPD).
Polym-phenylene isophthalamide is a regularly arranged zigzag macromolecule, which has been decomposed before melting. The glass transition temperature Tg is 270°C, and no obvious decomposition and carbonization will occur below 350°C. When the temperature exceeds 400°C, the fibers gradually become brittle, carbonized and decomposed.
But it will not produce molten droplets; it will not burn in flames, and has good flame retardancy. The limiting oxygen index LOI is 29%-32%, and its performance is excellent.

The production process of meta ara-aramid needle felt

1. Meta-aramid fiber opening
Preliminary loosening of para-aramid fibers is performed first to loosen large fiber clusters, and then fine opening is carried out to further loosen the fibers. This process should be fully opened, mixed evenly, and fiber damage should be avoided as much as possible.
2. Fiber carding
After the fiber is opened and fully mixed, it enters the air pressure cotton box, and is ready to be fed into the carding machine, and enters the carding machine.
After the machine, the fiber is carded through the interaction between the stripping wheel and the cylinder, and finally transferred by the doffer to form a fiber web. At this time, the carded fiber web is a light and thin single web
3. Laying the net
The fiber web enters the web-laying machine, and the web-laying trolley is driven by a toothed belt, and the fiber single web output by the carding machine is folded cross-folded to become a multi-layer fiber web with the required width and unit weight for the following process use.
4. Acupuncture compaction
The fiber web enters the needle loom, and there are a large number of needles with barbed hooks in the needle loom to puncture the fiber web repeatedly. After repeated laying, the fiber web is very fluffy when fed into the needle loom, with considerable thickness, but poor strength.
When the puncturing needle repeatedly punctures the fiber web, the fibers move up and down, causing extrusion, which makes the fibers in the fiber web close together and compressed. The friction between the fibers increases, and the strength increases, forming a nonwoven with a certain strength and density.
5. Post-processing
According to different process requirements, different post-treatments are carried out on the needle felt, and the treatment methods are as follows:
  • Calendering. The surface of the non-woven material is smooth, flat and uniform in thickness by hot rolling with a calender. The main purpose of calendering is to increase the smoothness and flatness of non-woven materials, and to increase the compactness of the material.
  • singeing. Singeing is mainly used in nonwoven materials for dust or dry material filtration, with its surface raised, The hairiness is burnt off to make it smooth.
  • Emulsion impregnation. The manufactured needle felt is impregnated with chemical agents to improve the high temperature resistance, acid and alkali resistance, oxidation resistance and other properties of the needle felt filter material.
  • High temperature setting. The needle felt filter material enters the tenter oven to realize the high temperature setting of the filter material. The filter material with good shaping effect has small deformation during use, high dimensional stability and long service life.
  • Laminating. The prepared needle-punched felt filter material is coated with PTFE film by a coating machine. The coated filter material will have a surface filtration effect, improve the filtration accuracy, and can filter finer dust particles. Improved corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance.

Meta aramid needle felt property

  • Polishing, filtering, sealing, liner, insulation, shockproof, damping, oil protection, heat preservation, heat insulation etc.
  • Inherent resistance to heat and flame, superior strength-to-weight, exceptional flexibility.
  • Flame retardant, high temperature resistance, high strength, high modulus, electrical insulation.
  • Acid and alkali resistance, resistant to organic solvents, tensile strength, cut & puncture resistance.
  • Heat resistance, corrosion reistance, anti-stab, anti-spike, anti-Acr flash, electric insulation , anti-fragments
  • High dimensional stability: very low creep, small.
  • Negative thermal expansion coefficient.
  • Excellent thermal stability: usable across a wide.
  • Temperature range, no melting point, high heat, stability, low heat conductivity.

The difference between meta-aramid and para-aramid:

The temperature resistance of para-aramid fiber is higher than that of meta-aramid fiber. The continuous use temperature range is -196℃~204℃, and it will not decompose or melt at a high temperature of 560℃. The most notable characteristics of para-aramid fiber are high strength, high modulus, high temperature resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and light weight. It has good insulation and anti-aging performance, and has a long life cycle. Aramid fiber cloth has excellent properties such as high strength, high modulus, high temperature and alkali resistance, light weight, insulation, anti-aging, long life cycle, stable chemical structure, no molten droplets when burned, and no toxic gas. Polyisophthalamide fiber is referred to as meta-aramid fiber; polyterephthalamide fiber is referred to as para-aramid fiber.

What are the applications of meta-aramid felt

  1. Mainly used for high-temperature filtration, high-temperature conveyor belts, transfer printing blankets, automotive hoses etc.
  2. Meta-aramid needle-punched felt products are widely used in: machinery, military industry, metallurgy, mining, forestry, textile, electromechanical, communication, instrumentation, transportation, aviation, boating, electronics, home appliances,  hardware, furniture, rubber and other industrial products.
  3. It is used in industrial fields such as flame retardant and high temperature resistance. It is mainly used for fire protection blankets,  welding blankets, flame retardant blankets, and high temperature resistant blankets. It is used in steel mills, aluminum plants, metallurgical plants, etc.
  4. It is used for interior decoration of automobiles, trains and airplanes and fire-proof and heat-insulating clothing. Para-aramid felt has the functions of fire prevention, filtration, high temperature resistance, and heat insulation.
  5. Meta-aramid fiber felt is used as a comfort layer for firefighting clothing.
  6. Gloves made of meta -aramid can prevent injuries caused by cutting, friction, puncture, high temperature and flames of fingers during industrial operations.
  7. Conveyor belts used in mines, glass factories, aluminum factories, steel factories, and metallurgical factories.
  8. Conveyor belt for digital printing machine ,due to meta  aramid felt has very good strength , and high temperatrue resistant functions.
