What is Pre-oxidized Pan (Panox, Preox, OPAN, OX, OPF, PYROMEX) Fiber?

Pre-oxidized pan fiber is a high-performance fiber material, which is obtained by high-temperature heat stabilization treatment with polypropylenenitrile (a type of polyacrylonitrile fiber) as raw material. Pre-oxidation is a heat treatment process that oxidizes pan fiber at high temperatures to give them higher thermal stability and strength. Pan carbon fiber production begins with this oxidation step, which is why the process is critical in carbon fiber manufacturing.

Pre-oxidized Pan fibers have excellent high temperature resistance and can withstand high temperature environments up to 350°C, so they are widely used in materials that require high temperature resistance in aerospace, automobiles, ships and other fields. In addition, oxidized fiber also has the advantages of low specific gravity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and good chemical stability.

No halogens and very low toxic gas emissions, upon flame exposure. Oxidized polyacrylonitrile fiber is produced as a 300,000 filament tow and can be crimped and cut into various staple lengths. Three denier sizes (1.7dtex, 2.2dtex and 5.0dtex) and two different fiber densities (1.37 g/cc and 1.40 g/cc) are available. The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) value is dependent upon fiber density. Besides providing outstanding protection against direct flame, oxidized pan fiber products exhibit low thermal conductivity and make excellent thermal insulators.

Pre-oxidized Pan Fiber Characteristic

Pre-oxidized pan fiber, sometimes confused with polyethylene terephthalate, is actually derived from pan polyacrylonitrile. Pre-oxidized Pan has high flame retardancy, and its limiting oxygen index is between 45% and 55%. Excellent thermal stability, the fiber does not melt, does not soften and shrink, and has no dissolved droplets during combustion. It is a quasi-non-combustible product; it has good heat insulation effect, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, chemical environment resistance, and radiation resistance. It is suitable for textile processing performance, fabric light weight, soft, good water absorption and other advantages.

The most important function is it can be self-extinguishing when exposed to flame. This is why pan fiber carbon precursors must first be oxidized before they can be carbonized. So it is used for effective heat-blocking and fire barrier materials.
