Description

What is PBO fiber?

PBO (Zylon), the English name is polyparaphenylenebenzoxazole, please refer to the following molecular structure as shown on below:

PBO is a unique conjugated rigid rod-shaped molecule in structure. The molecular structure is highly symmetrical, which gives PBO fiber excellent mechanical and thermal properties. The tensile strength reaches 5.8GPa, the thermal decomposition temperature is 650°C, and the limiting oxygen index>68%.

Due to its unique molecular structure and special manufacturing process, PBO fiber has the characteristics of ultra-high strength, ultra-high modulus, high temperature resistance and high thermal environment stability. It has excellent overall performance and is known as the 21st century super fiber. The application fields are mainly in the field of composite materials, such as: high-pressure vessel winding, rubber reinforcement, and civil fields, such as: tunnels and bridges concrete reinforcement, protective clothing for fire protection and high-temperature furnaces, high-temperature heat-resistant felts and filtering equipment, competitive sports equipment, High-strength ropes, etc. Special fiber optic cable materials. SH-PBO filament is divided into three types of fibers: SHCG-PBO-HS (high strength type), SHCG-PBO-HM (high model) and SHCG-PBO-NR (heat-resistant type) according to different production processes and product uses. Recommended application forms are winding, rope, woven fabric, weftless fabric, etc.

The following is the parameter table of these two types of PBO filament

Pbo fiber property

  • Excellent strength & modulus
  • Good flame resistance
  • Excellent thermal stability
  • Excellent creep resistance
  • Good chemical resistance

Pbo fiber disadvantage

  • Very poor UV resistance
  • Poor compressive strength
  • Strength loss in exposure to strong acids
Excellent heat resistance and flame retardancy. Ordinary fibers will decompose in high temperature environments, while pbo fibers can resist decomposition even in extremely high temperature environments (650°C). PBO fiber maintains high durability at 500°C. The durability, heat resistance and elastic modulus of pbo fiber are quite strong, which is the highest among organic fiber products on the market.

3. What are the applications of PBO?

  1. Machine protective cover, heat shield, thermal shields. For example, in mechanical terms, metals get very hot when welded. Since most robots are made of metal or resin, it's common for them to melt from the heat during the welding process if they are not covered with heat shield. Therefore, by covering the robot with fabric made of PBO filament  as a protective cover, the robot becomes very durable.
  2. Firefighting clothing, safety protective clothing. Firefighting clothing and safety clothing made with the flame-retardant properties of pbo fiber are useful for rescue workers jumping into a fire scene without fear of being burned.
  3. Safety gloves. Due to its high strength, cut-resistant, lightweight and good heat resistance, it is also used as a raw material for safety gloves.
  4. Reinforcement. Due to its high strength and elastic modulus, it is often used to reinforce rubber and resin products. If it cannot meet the application as a single fiber, it can be combined with other fibers to make products.
  5. High pressure vessel winding.
  6. High-strength ropes,  lifting ropes, cables.
  7. Sewing threads, woven fabrics, and weftless fabrics.
  8. Aluminium spacers.
  9. Sporting goods.
  10. Rubber products reinforcing fibers - tires, hoses, conveyor belts
  11. Fiber reinforced composite materials
  12. Optical cable reinforcing fiber
  13. Rope reinforced fiber cable, high strength rope
  14. High temperature heat resistant filter fabric
  15. Bulletproof materials - bulletproof vests, bulletproof helmets, armor
