What Is UHMWPE Yarn?

Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) yarn is made from high-strength UHMWPE filaments. The raw material typically has a molecular weight in the millions of grams per mole. During production, the polymer is generally processed through gel spinning and high-ratio drawing. This helps align the molecular chains along the fiber axis, producing lightweight fibers with high tensile strength.

UHMWPE plied yarn is made by combining and twisting two or more single yarns. Twisting helps hold the yarn structure together and affects how the yarn performs during weaving, braiding, sewing, and other processing. S-twist or Z-twist can be selected to suit the yarn direction, machine settings, and requirements of the finished product.

UHMWPE yarn has a low density and very low moisture absorption, making it suitable for ropes, fishing nets, cut-resistant textiles, and other industrial products. Its low weight can help reduce the weight of finished products, while its low moisture absorption helps the yarn remain stable in humid conditions. Low moisture absorption does not, by itself, make a fabric or finished product waterproof.

Considerations When Selecting UHMWPE Yarn

UHMWPE yarn offers a high strength-to-weight ratio, low density, and very low moisture absorption. It is suitable for products that require strength while keeping weight low.

Typical UHMWPE filament properties include a density of approximately 0.97 g/cm³, tensile strength of 2.8–3.6 GPa, modulus of 80–130 GPa, and elongation at break of 2.8–4.0%. Actual values vary by grade, yarn construction, and test conditions. Please confirm the test data for the specific product before purchase.

- Temperature: Prolonged exposure above 80°C may affect yarn strength. Check the temperature limits of the selected grade.
- Knot security: UHMWPE has a smooth surface, so knots may slip. Test the knot type or consider another fastening method.
- Cost: The initial cost may be higher than that of conventional yarns. Consider service life, weight savings, and replacement frequency when comparing overall costs.

UHMWPE Yarn for Ropes, Nets and Industrial Textiles Ropes and cordage

UHMWPE yarn is used in rope and cordage constructions where low weight and tensile strength are important. Tell us the rope-making process and target yarn specification so the ply and twist can be reviewed for your production line.

High-Strength Ropes & Cables

UHMWPE fiber is used in braided ropes, industrial cords and high-strength lines where weight and tensile performance matter. Its low density helps keep the finished rope lighter, which can make handling and installation easier.

Cut-Resistant Gloves & Protective Textiles

UHMWPE yarn is widely used in yarn systems for cut-resistant gloves, sleeves and other protective textiles. Its strength and low weight make it useful in products where flexibility and wearability matter. UHMWPE fiber can also be combined with other yarns or reinforcement materials.

Fishing Lines & Nets

UHMWPE filament yarn is used in braided fishing lines, commercial fishing nets and aquaculture products. Low water absorption and a high strength-to-weight ratio make the material practical for marine use.

Outdoor & Sports Equipment

High tenacity UHMWPE yarn is used in lightweight cords and selected sports and outdoor products. It is often chosen where a low-weight, high-strength line is required. Finished-product performance depends on knots, splices, braiding, exposure conditions and other design factors.

Cut-Resistant Clothing & Equipment

UHMWPE fiber is commonly used in cut-resistant gloves, sleeves, protective clothing and other safety textiles. Its high tensile strength and low weight make it useful for protective products that need to remain flexible and comfortable during daily work. UHMWPE yarn can be knitted or combined with other fibers, such as nylon, glass fiber or stainless steel, to produce different protective yarn constructions.

Ballistic & Protective Equipment

Selected grades of UHMWPE fiber are used to manufacture ballistic UD composites for body armor, helmets, ballistic plates, protective shields and vehicle armor. The fiber s high strength-to-weight ratio helps reduce the weight of protective systems, which is important for equipment that needs to be worn, carried or installed on vehicles.

What is UHMWPE plied yarn?

UHMWPE plied yarn is made by bringing two or more ends of UHMWPE yarn together and twisting them. The construction can be specified by the input yarn size, number of ends and twist direction.

What is the difference between UHMWPE yarn and UHMWPE twisted yarn?

“Twisted UHMWPE yarn” describes yarn that has been twisted, while “plied UHMWPE yarn” usually refers to two or more ends combined and twisted together. The terms may overlap depending on how the yarn is constructed.

Can you supply S twist and Z twist UHMWPE yarn?

Yes. S twist and Z twist can be specified. Please confirm the required direction against your machine setup or existing yarn.

What denier options are available?

UHMWPE input yarn is available from 10D–3000D, with 200D, 400D, 600D and 800D among the commonly selected sizes. Plied yarn options depend on the input yarn and construction.

Can UHMWPE yarn be used for ropes or fishing nets?

UHMWPE yarn is used in rope, netting and fishing-related products. The suitable denier, ply and twist depend on the construction and processing equipment.

Is all UHMWPE yarn suitable for cut-resistant gloves?

No. The finished cut performance depends on the yarn construction, fabric or glove design and test results. Confirm suitability through testing of the finished product.

What information should I send for a quote?

Please provide the input denier, ply count, S or Z twist, twist level if known, application, quantity and package requirements. If you are still developing the specification, send the end use and processing method.
